Floor Cleaning
We spend a lot of time walking around the house. Babies and kids spend even more time running around the house and crawling on the floor. There is always a little controversy about which type of floor is better for allergies. Hardwood or carpet. Hardwood would seem to be the clear winner as carpet traps dust. However, it has been found that since carpet actually does trap dust, it may not be as easy to stir up while dust and allergens on a hard floor kick up quite easily.
A dirty, dusty hardwood floor may be worse than a carpet floor if not properly cleaned.
What you can do
One of the easiest things you can do is to limit the amount of dust that you bring into the home and limit the amount that is recirculated. Changing the filters on the air conditioner/furnace is a great place to start. Removing shoes at the doorway is another great way to limit the amount of dust, germs, allergens and debris that enters your home.
Next, clean your carpet areas with a vacuum that is equipped with a HEPA filter. The filter will capture the dust, animal hair and animal dander that has settled into you carpet and onto your hardwood floor. This should be done at least 1 time per week and more if necessary.
Hardwood floors should be cleaned every 2 days or so to limit the amount of dust and allergen buildup. If hardwood and tile floors are maintained properly, they can be better for your allergies than carpet. If they are not maintained, they can be worse.
